License Status

New Insurance Continuing Education Hours

  • All Agents are required to complete 24 Insurance Continuing Education credit hours, 3 of which must be in Ethics required every two years.  

Course Subject Requirements

  • 3 hours of total Insurance Continuing Education CE credits hours must be completed in Ethics
  • Annuity – Best Interest Interest Certification: Effective 1/1/2023, before selling, soliciting or negotiating Annuity policies in North Carolina, must completed a one-time 4-hour annuity certification, the annuity best interest course, prior to selling annuities.
  • Long Term Care Partnership Training:
    • Each licensee who holds an accident and health or sickness license, a Medicare/Supplement Long-Term Care limited lines license and who sells, solicits or negotiates Long-Term Care Partnership policies shall complete eight (8) hours of Long-Term Care Partnership education as defined in 11 NCAC 06A.0801(12)  within one year of March 7, 2011. After meeting this initial eight (8) hour training requirement, four (4) hours of Long-Term Care Partnership education is required every biennial compliance period thereafter.
    • Each licensee issued an accident and health or sickness license or a Medicare/Supplement Long-Term Care limited lines license after March 7, 2011 shall complete eight (8) hours of Long-Term Care Partnership credit as defined in 11 NCAC 06A 10.0801(12) prior to selling, soliciting or negotiating a Long-Term Care Partnership policy. After meeting this initial eight (8) hour training requirement, four (4) hours of Long-Term Care Partnership education is required every biennial compliance period thereafter.
  • Each person holding a property and liability, personal lines, or adjuster license shall complete a continuing education course on flood insurance and the National Flood Insurance Program within two years after January 1, 2008, and every four years thereafter.
  • Adjusters and Agents who hold one or more of the following licenses: Property, Casualty, Personal Lines, Life, Accident/Health and Variable Life/Variable Annuity Products may complete their 24 Insurance Continuing Education credit hours requirement by taking courses in any line of authority.

Renewal or Compliance Date for Licensees

  • No license renewals in this state. License is perpetual as long as agent does not go more than 1 year without a valid appointment and meets CE requirement.
  • Compliance date is new and biennial

Types of Courses Accepted

  • Independent self study courses or classroom.

Monitor Requirements

  • Online exams DO NOT require a monitor.  
  • Correspondence courses are required to be monitored by a disinterested third party.

Reporting to Your State

  • $2.05 per credit hour is required to report to your state.
  • State Insurance completions are reported 2 times every business day. If course is completed after 2 PM PT, it will be reported the following business day.
  • CFP reports are sent on Friday at 2 PM PT to the CFP Board electronically.
  • You may also self-report your CFP completions to www.cfp.net

Carryover Hours & Course Repetition

  • Single/Dual License: excess hours may be carried over to the next renewal period
  • A course may NOT be taken for credit more than once within a 2 year license term.

Exemptions

  • Newly licensed individuals are exempt for the calendar year in which the license is issued.
  • Individuals who are at least 65 years of age, have been licensed continuously for at least 25 years, and either a) hold a CLU, CPCU, ChFC, FLMI or IIA designation, or b) certify that they are inactive insurance agency owners who neither solicit applications for insurance nor take part in the day-to-day operation of the agency.

Method to Certify Completion:

  • For Most States you will be able to print your certificate of completion online once you have completed your exam.
  • We usually report to the State Department of Insurance or regulatory board by the next business day.
  • It may, however, take your State DOI or regulatory board up to 30 days to report your completion results on their systems.

Nonresidents

  • Initial LTC Requirement:  A non-resident producer must complete an initial 8-hour NAIC LTC training course approved by the state of North Carolina OR complete an 8-hour NAIC LTC course from another state to fulfill North Carolina requirements. Non-resident producers are exempt from completing the prerequisite education & exam but will still be required to apply for an LTC license in NC meaning they need to obtain a L & H License in North Carolina. 
  • On-going LTC Requirement: A 4-hour follow-up LTC course is required every compliance period.
